Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience - University of Florida

THE WHITNEY LABORATORY
for MARINE BIOSCIENCE

Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience is a full-time University of Florida research center for biomedical research and biotechnology located in St. Augustine, Florida. Founded in 1974, the Whitney Lab is dedicated to using marine model animals for studying fundamental problems in biology and applying that knowledge to issues of human health, natural resources, and the environment. Researchers at the lab are on the front lines of a variety of scientific areas including biodiversity, ocean health, marine chemistry, neuroscience, sensory biology, evolutionary genomics, embryology, and cell regeneration – working to Go Greater for all of us.

Women's History Month - Today

Group of women

Groundbreaking science stems from the roots of previous research. This Women’s History month, we’ve shared stories of women who have pushed the boundaries of STEM in the 50 years of the Whitney Lab. For our final post, we wanted to celebrate the women in science who are making history at the Whitney Lab today. Read More

Antarctica Research Sampling for Drug Discovery

Scientist in Antarctica

In January 2024, Dr. Federica Montesanto, a post-doc in the Loesgen Lab, participated in a two-week Antarctic expedition. The objective was twofold: to isolate bacteria and fungi potentially useful in drug discovery and to characterize the microbiomes of marine organisms and inorganic substrates found in these remote locations. Whitney Laboratory celebrates Women's History Month - Join us throughout March as we celebrate women who have helped shape the Whitney Laboratory to what it is today! Dr. Barbara-Anne Battelle wasn’t just an outstanding researcher — she helped put the Whitney Lab on the map by developing an education program to enhance classroom instruction. Read More

UF News Article: New Technique May Help Scientists Stave Off Coral Reef Collapse

Nematostella, Credit: Federica S

In a first for helping coral polyps respond to these threats, UF scientists at Whitney Laboratory have recreated the first stage of the coral skeleton creation process in a common, squishy sea anemone. The technique transforms this soft-bodied creature into the perfect lab model for researching coral skeletons and developing ways to bolster coral polyps in a changing climate. Read More
