A
common and important benchmark
for the quality of any research
organization is the amount of
grant funding it secures. From
an operational perspective,
however, research grants are
only part of the picture because
grant funding is directed, and
only addresses the immediate
needs of specific research programs.
Private support, on the other
hand, provides us with the flexibility
to rapidly respond to exciting
new opportunities and to plan
for long-term development. We
have just completed a capital
campaign for a new education
facility The
Center for Marine Studies,
and are embarking on a new campaign
for The Center for Marine Animal
Health, a one-of-a-kind marine
vet school.
There are four avenues of private
funding that support different
activities at the Whitney Lab.
- Gift
Fund
(#003567)
This is a general fund that
provides for the day to day
operation of the Laboratory.
Its funds have been used to
support fund raising activities
and events, travel for students,
and minor acquisitions. This
is the most flexible of the
four funds and consequently
is very important to the overall
activities of the Laboratory.
- Education
Fund (#005161)
The Education Fund supports
the Laboratory’s outreach
education
programs to local schools
and our communities.
- Capital
Campaign Fund
(#007381)
The Whitney Laboratory campus
is growing and much of this
growth has and will be made
possible through contributions
to our Capital Fund. The Laboratory
is currently in the construction
phase of a new education building,
The Center for Marine Studies,
a facility that was made possible
through donations to the Capital
Campaign. Occupancy of this
building is planned for fall,
2006. A new capital campaign
for The Center for Marine
Animal Health, and new dormitories
is currently underway.
Donations to this fund
are eligible for a one-for-one
match by the state of Florida.
- Jim
Ebert Graduate Student Fellowship
(#008571)
This fellowship was established
in recognition of the advice,
leadership and popularity
of Jim Ebert, one of the Laboratory’s
first scientific advisors
and a member of the Board
of Trustees. As its name suggests,
this fund provides scholarship
support for graduate students
conducting their dissertation
research at the Laboratory.
All
privately donated funds for
the Whitney Lab are handled
by the University
of Florida Foundation Inc.,
a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization
that receives, invests and administers
private support for the University
of Florida. All gifts
are tax deductible.
