Why give to the Whitney Laboratory?

Since scientific grants only address the immediate needs of specific research programs, your gift to the Whitney Lab provides us the flexibility to rapidly respond to exciting new opportunities and to plan for long-term development. This vital funding gives the Whitney Lab the margin of excellence it needs to remain a leader among the nation's top public research institutions.

We have just completed a capital campaign for a new education facility, the Center for Marine Studies, which serves students of all ages. We have embarked on a new campaign for the Center for Marine Animal Health and a new housing/conference complex so that we can bring more students and visiting scientists to the Whitney Lab, enriching their learning experience and the scientists and students working here.

Your investment in the Whitney Lab is an investment in the students and faculty who live, learn and work here today and in future scientists whose scientific curiosity was sparked here. Indeed, the countless scientific discoveries, medical breakthroughs and advances in basic biological science inspired by the experience of the Whitney Lab touch our friends and neighbors everywhere. The experimental biologists of tomorrow will be shaped by the impact of your gifts and investments.

There are four avenues of private funding that support different activities at the Whitney Lab:

  • Gift Fund (#003567)
This is a general fund that provides for the day to day operation of the Laboratory. Its funds have been used to support travel for students, minor acquisitions and fund raising activities and events. This is the most flexible of the four funds and, consequently, is very important to the overall activities of the Laboratory.
  • Whitney Fund
This fund supports the scientific and educational mission of the Whitney Lab. Contributors to this fund receive certain benefits, according to the level of contribution.
  • Education Fund (#005161)
The Education Fund supports the Laboratory’s outreach education programs to local schools and our communities.
  • Capital Campaign Fund (#007381)
The Whitney Laboratory campus is growing and much of this growth has and will be made possible through contributions to our Capital Fund. A new capital campaign for The Center for Marine Animal Health and a new dormitory/conference center is currently underway.
Donations to this fund may be eligible for a one-for-one match by the state of Florida.
  • Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Regenerative Healing Fund (#018547)
This fund supports the rehabilitation and regeneration of marine life; including the sea turtle and a variety of invertebrate organisms that will yield insight into human health and disease.
  • Jim Ebert Just-Do-It Fund (#008571)
This fellowship was established in recognition of the advice, leadership and popularity of Jim Ebert, one of the Laboratory's first scientific advisors and a member of the Board of Trustees. As its name suggests, this fund allows the lab to respond in a timely manner to new initiatives and opportunities.

All privately donated funds for the Whitney Lab are handled by the University of Florida Foundation Inc., a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that receives, invests and administers private support for the University of Florida. Visit the Foundation web site to explore the many gift types and UF incentives. All gifts are tax deductible.
