Martin
Chalfie. Ph.D. is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor and chair
of the Dept. of Biological Sciences at Columbia University and a 2008 Nobel
Laureate in Chemistry. Chalfie joined the
Whitney Laboratory's Board of Scientific Advisors in 2007 and will serve
until 2011. He will deliver the Whitney Laboratory Lecture in Gainesville
on December 1 and at the Whitney Lab on December 2.
Martin Chalfie was one of three to receive the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the initial discovery of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and for a series of important developments which led to its use as a tagging tool in bioscience. Chalfie demonstrated the value of GFP as a luminous genetic tag for various biological phenomena in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. He uses this animal to investigate aspects of nerve cell development and function, particularly with respect to touch and mechanosensation.
The title of Dr. Chalfie's lecture is GFP. Lighting Up Life. The Whitney Laboratory Lecture is traditionally given on the main campus in Gainesville at the Medical School. This year's lecture will be at the HPNP Auditorium in the HPNP Complex at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 1. There will be a reception for Dr. Chalfie before the lecture at 3:00 p.m. in the HPNP Reception Hall. Everyone is welcome.
On Wednesday, December 2, Dr. Chalfie will deliver his lecture at the Whitney Lab in the Lohman Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. The public is welcome, but seating is limited, so you may pick up free tickets at the Center for Marine Studies, at the Whitney Administration Building or Herbie Wiles Insurance in St. Augustine. Admittance is not guaranteed without a ticket.
