Groundbreaking Ceremony

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Research Village at the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience took place on Dec. 2, 2017.

Phase 1 Now Open!

The Research Village expands capacity at Whitney Laboratory to educate more students and welcome visiting scientists while enriching the learning experience for everyone.

Investment in research infrastructure at Whitney Laboratory now paves the way for preeminence in modern education and research opportunities for decades to come. Besides the University of Florida, no other university in the nation has this unique opportunity. This investment signals to the rest of the world that the University of Florida recognizes coastal science (e.g. sea level rise, coastal food supplies, emerging pathogen spread) as a pivotal issue for the coming century.

Housing

Research Village features include:
  • Phase 1: 6 coastal-style cottages with 24-bed capacity
  • Phase 1 doubles housing capacity
  • LEED design and construction
  • Dune restoration landscape
  • Outdoor classroom, living room and collaboration spaces
