A Call for Action Sea Turtle Hospital Endowment Launch

Published: Wednesday, September 25, 2024

A new endowment has been launched to support the conservation of sea turtles by sustaining operations at the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Laboratory. By joining us in our conservation mission, you or your business can help provide a sustainable future for the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Laboratory.

What does this endowment do?

Your support for this endowment directly contributes to essential operations, crucial medical supplies, and staffing needed for daily procedures at the Sea Turtle Hospital. By addressing these critical needs, we can enhance our conservation efforts, rehabilitate more turtles, and protect these federally endangered species for years to come.

“Now that the construction of our new and expanded Sea Turtle Research Center and Hospital and lab building is well under way, it is imperative that we secure the funding to retain our most skilled and trusted Hospital staff members," said Dr. Mark Martindale, Director of the Whitney Laboratory. "Fulfilling this endowment is the first step to leveraging Whitney's extremely unique and cutting-edge scientific approaches to understanding the etiology of this worldwide disease."

It Take a Team

Every animal care staff member and volunteer plays a vital role at the hospital, caring for current patients and tending to new intakes. Most of the hospital’s patients are in critical condition, with an average stay of between 8 and 12 months. These patients may need between three and five Fibropapilloma tumor removal surgeries.

Each and every turtle that arrives at the hospital receives treatment with close monitoring and detailed observation. Patients receive a weekly complete examination with our veterinarian and a CT scan to rule out any internal tumors. Day-to-day care may include providing exams, fluids, x-rays, antibiotics and blood work. The team of dedicated individuals are the core foundation in the success of the Hospital!

"Please join the community call to action to help sea turtles by supporting our key staff who care for them," said Jessica Long, Senior Director of Advancement. "Every gift towards the endowment makes a difference in continuing the hospital. Please contact us or give online using the information provided here."
