Learning about and viewing sea stars, urchins, and other invertebrates big and small just got a whole lot better in the Whitney Laboratory education department. Thanks to a generous donation from the NextEra Energy Foundation/FPL, the education space has new wet lab tables and interactive, AI-powered smart boards.
"We were thrilled to have the opportunity to tour the NextEra Energy Foundation team through our wet lab and education classrooms. Our collaboration has allowed us to elevate our learning spaces to meet the evolving needs of our K-12 learners, adult community members, and graduate student teachers," said Amy Biedenbach, Whitney Laboratory Assistant Director of Education and Outreach.
The wet lab area has a central water table feature that allows for up-close viewing and handling of a variety of organisms. With our locally made custom acrylic tank system, this wet lab allows for upgraded viewing opportunities and enhanced accessibility. In the classroom, two AI-powered smart boards use University of Florida approved software systems and allow for interactive student engagement during real-time science and research discoveries.
Recently, FPL External Affairs Manager Carol Saviak and FPL Associate Business Analyst Heather Reese visited the education department to see the impact of the wet lab and classroom upgrades. NextEra Energy Foundation partners with and invests in nonprofit organizations throughout Florida. They aim to build strong communities, improving the lives of their customers through innovation, opportunity, and safety.
The Whitney education department remains dedicated to advancing K-12 education, citizen science, and public engagement by facilitating science communication and lifelong learning. The education programs are designed to increase science literacy in our community and make science fun and engaging for all ages.
