Congratulations to Duffy Lab Ph.D. Student Emily Skinner for being the recipient of three awards this year to support her research! Emily studies sea turtle ecology and habitat usage of local and regional populations. This includes research into innovative cost-effective environmental DNA-based tools to study natal origins, population movements and identify foraging hotspots crucial to supporting a healthy population. Emily also has a focus on the occurrence of the cancerous disease fibropapillomatosis in local green sea turtle populations.

- Whitney Laboratory Matthaei Scholarship
The Carl and Marcella Matthaei Ecological Scholarship Fund at the Whitney Laboratory provides support for University of Florida scientists-in-training to have access to the Matanzas River Basin, where they can engage in its biodiversity, ecology, and conservation.
- UF Biology Department's Brian Riewald Memorial Research Grant
The Brian Riewald Memorial Fund was established in 2002 to honor the memory of Brian Riewald, a student in Dr. Karen Bjorndal’s lab. Brian was tragically killed in a bicycle accident in October 2001 while a graduate student in the Department of Zoology. The purpose of the fund is to provide research grants to Biology graduate students pursuing an MS or PhD in Zoology with deserving projects and inadequate funding.
