The Sea Turtle Research and Rehabilitation Hospital at the University of Florida's Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience has received a $39,368 grant from the Florida Sea Turtle Grants Program to enhance its diagnostic capabilities for sea turtle care.
The funding will support the purchase of a Samsung V5 Veterinary Ultrasound System — including specialized transducers, imaging software, and accessories — enabling non-invasive, real-time assessment of internal organs and soft tissues in sea turtle patients. As Florida's northernmost sea turtle rehabilitation facility, the Whitney Lab Hospital treats hundreds of sick, injured, and fibropapillomatosis-affected turtles each year. The new ultrasound system will improve diagnosis, surgical planning, and patient outcomes while reducing handling stress, and will also serve as a tool for staff training and public education.
