Congratulations to Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Joseph Ryan for receiving a three year grant from the National Science Foundation for the project titled:

Interrogating Molecular and Physiological Adaptations in Antarctic Marine Animals

The grant involves comparing sequence data from bryozoans (“mossy” filter-feeding invertebrates that form important habitats for other animals) in the Antarctic to those of subtropical species to understand evolutionary innovations associated with living in polar environments. Dr. Ryan will be collaborating with Dr. Scott Santagata from Long Island University.

As part of the grant they will be conducting summer workshops at Whitney Laboratory to train other researchers in the techniques they use.
