The Bailey-Niblett Family Endowment recently helped fund Karen Carvajal's trip to One Ocean Science Congress in Nice, France, held as part of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). This global event brought together scientists, policymakers, and innovators committed to advancing ocean sustainability.
"I was proud to present my poster titled “Innovative hatchery: enhancing larvae production in limited space in a sustainable and scalable procedure”, which highlights a compact hatchery design aimed at improving larval fish production while minimizing spatial and environmental impact. Ocean-based foods represent a vital source of nutrition and livelihoods for communities worldwide, and aquaculture plays an essential role in building more sustainable, equitable, and resilient food systems. In addition to sharing my research, I participated in vibrant discussions, formed meaningful cross-sector connections, and was especially inspired by the leadership of Early Career Ocean Professionals and voices from the Global South. A personal highlight was having the honor of seeing Dr. Sylvia Earle speak in person. I was also grateful to receive a Special Recognition in the OceanPrediction DCC Photo Contest, under the Science and Innovation category, which celebrates the role of science and human connection in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development."
Karen Carvajal is a Ph.D. student in the Whitney Laboratory Ibarra-Castro Lab. The Bailey-Niblett Family Endowment assists in funding for research projects and travel for graduate students, postdoctoral research associates and pre-tenured faculty at the Whitney Laboratory.
