Liao Lab Welcomes Dr. Fan Yang

Please welcome Dr. Fan Yang to the Whitney Laboratory! She joins the Liao Lab as a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

Fan pursued her Ph.D. in Fish Behavior and Bypass Systems in School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, Wuhan University, China, from 2020 to 2023, and spent one year as a visiting Ph.D. student at the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Glaciology (VAW), ETH Zurich, Switzerland. During this period, Fan conducted her doctoral research on fish swimming as an individual and schools under the guidance of Prof. Yuhong Zeng, mainly focusing on the hydrodynamic mechanisms of fish swimming. She also studied downstream fish bypass systems at VAW under the co-supervision of Prof. Boes Robert and Dr. Ismail Albayrak, working on fish protection and guidance from the perspective of engineering applications. From 2023 to 2024, she worked as a post-doc researcher in the Fish Biology Group at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Aqua) under the mentorship of Senior Researcher Sebastian Nikitas Politis. During the 1.5 years in Denmark, she mainly worked on the advancing tagging technology to discover the European eel spawning area (TAG-EEL project). Her research interests include behavioral ecology in fish, 2D and 3D fish tracking and analysis, and multi-factor mechanisms behind fish swimming. As a post-doc, Fan is eager to work on impactful questions on unsteady fish behaviors and strengthen her expertise through interdisciplinary research in the Liao Lab.
