Congratulations to Alicia Boyd for receiving travel awards to fund her recent trip to the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) Conference. Alicia received a grant from the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories and funding support from the Bailey-Niblett Family Endowment.
"Because of this opportunity, I was able to present my talk, “Regrowing the growth zone: metamorphosis kickstarting regeneration in Capitella teleta” in the development, regeneration, and metamorphosis session of the conference. Following my talk, I responded to several interesting and engaging questions. This experience was my first time presenting at a national conference and helped me further hone my professional presentation skills. Over the course of the ensuing days, I attended talks from members in my field that informed topics I have been considering and working on, as well as talks from those not directly in my field that helped expand my understanding of cell biology, evolution, and genetics. I was also able to attend a meeting with members of the Division of Evolution and Developmental Biology to discuss the progress and future of the field. I utilized my time at the conference to meet with new colleagues, reconnect with previous colleagues, and engage in enlightening discussions about science theory, the practicalities of participating in science, and options after graduation."
