WHITNEY LAB VIRTUAL 5KS
Whitney Lab Virtual 5K 2023
Thank you to all who joined us virtually for the 2023 Whitney Lab 5K - a virtual walk/run for marine science with featured animal - the jellyfish! We had over 170 virtual participants and registration included a Whitney 5K t-shirt and a finisher medal.
Lace Up Your Shoes for Marine Science!
All 5K proceeds went to the Whitney Laboratory gift fund, a general fund that provides for the day-to-day operations of the Laboratory. It powers the labs programming including community lectures, public education, facilities improvements, public events, and critical student experiences at the lab. It is essential to operating all the programs at the lab!
Fun Fact - Jellyfish Move by Jet Propulsion!
Through the alternate contraction and relaxation of their bodies, jellyfish produce a jet of water whose propulsive force propels them through the water.
Jellyfish are mainly free-swimming marine animals with umbrella-shaped bells and trailing tentacles, although a few are anchored to the seabed by stalks rather than being mobile. The bell can pulsate to provide propulsion for highly efficient locomotion. The tentacles are armed with stinging cells and may be used to capture prey and defend against predators.
