Summer research spotlight: The Matanzas River Basin is a remarkable ecosystem, and the Whitney Lab’s campus is strategically located with easy access to numerous and diverse habitats set out along the Florida coast.  The establishment of the Carl and Marcella Matthaei Ecological Scholarship Fund at the Whitney Lab provides support for scientists-in-training to have access to this wonderful natural resource, where they can become engaged and involved in its biodiversity, ecology, and conservation.  We thank those who have contributed to the Matthaei Ecological Scholarship Fund, and would like to introduce you to the 2016  scholar, University of Florida Undergraduate student Alexandra Tsalickis.

Ms. Tsalickis has served as a research volunteer in the Osborne Laboratory at the Whitney Laboratory in the spring of 2016. She is a senior at the University of Florida earning a bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology and conservation and a minor in fisheries and aquatic science. She has a strong interest in ecosystem dynamics, and the scholarship will allow her to learn more about biodiversity and changes in landscape ecology, as well as community outreach during her summer here at the Whitney Laboratory. Ms. Tsalickis’ focus will be the Matanzas River Basin projects in the Osborne laboratory as well as contributing to the Matanzas Basin Biodiversity inventory/field guides.
