Apollo Squidlips and Major Released by Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab on Sept. 7

Published: Thursday, September 8, 2016

We are pleased to announce that the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab released Apollo Squidlips and Major on Sept. 7, 2016, at 11 a.m. near the Apollo Visitor Center at 7611 South Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach.

Apollo Squidlips is a juvenile green sea turtle that was found stranded on the beach in Cape Canaveral on March 22, 2016. Upon being admitted to the hospital, Apollo Squidlips was severely emaciated, lethargic and had a low red cell count. He/she also had several small fibropapillomatosis tumors. Upon arrival, Apollo Squidlips weighed approximately two pounds. Thanks to good nutrition and a healthy appetite, Apollo Squidlips tipped the scales at almost five pounds and was ready for release.

Major, named in honor of Veterans Day, is a green sea turtle that was found stranded on Daytona Beach on Nov. 10, 2015. At the time of admittance to the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab, Major was severely emaciated and had fibropapillomatosis tumors. Now, Major is tumor free, after undergoing surgery at the hospital, and healthy.

We wish Apollo Squidlips and Major the best. They will be missed!
