Dr. Leonid Moroz Awarded Grant from National Institutes of Health

Published: Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Congratulations to Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience, Genetics, Biology and Chemistry Dr. Leonid Moroz for receiving a $2+ millon grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his project titled:

Development of neuron-specific nanoscale toolkits for single-cell recognition

The grant award is a part of the "Promoting Research in Basic Neuroscience" from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the NIH.

The purpose of the grant is to support fundamental research related to neural systems and promote frontiers of science at the intersection of disciplines such as chemistry and biology. Dr. Moroz' research will be on a diverse spectrum of marine invertebrates (from comb jellies to sea slugs), which provide unique opportunities to understand the formation of neural circuits, learning, and memory.

The Moroz Lab team will work on deciphering genomic bases of neuronal identity and plasticity using advanced nanoscopic molecular tools by developing novel strategies of in vitro neuronal evolution in the laboratory. In other words, they will study and model cells and chemical evolution.
