Martindale Lab Publishes Paper in Journal of Experimental Marine Biology

Congratulations to Casandra Newkirk, graduate student at Whitney Laboratory, and Mark Martindale, director at Whitney Laboratory, on the recently published paper in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. The paper investigated the use of the upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea xamachana) as a model organism for the cnidarian-algal symbiosis and looked at how Cassiopea polyps were able to survive following bleaching by introducing them to symbiotic algae from three different sources. It was also observed how these sources of algal cells impacted the metamorphosis from polyp to ephyra in the Cassiopea life cycle. Ultimately, this model, which is easier to use in a lab than endangered corals, can be used to study coral bleaching.
