Periwinkle Released on World Turtle Day

Published: Sunday, May 21, 2017

We are pleased to announce that Periwinkle (or Peri as we affectionately know him) was released on May 23, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the River to Sea Preserve public beach (known as Marineland beach) on World Turtle Day.

Peri is a juvenile green sea turtle that received treatment at the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab since September 5, 2016. Peri was found in Port Orange, Fla., and initially received treatment at the Volusia Marine Science Center before being transferred to our sea turtle hospital.

Peri arrived a little thin and had a few tumors caused by fibropapillomatosis (FP). Also, fishing line was wrapped tightly around the base of Peri’s largest tumor. After a few minor procedures to remove all of Peri’s tumors, there was not any new tumor growth or regrowth of old tumors. Peri was deemed healthy by our veterinarian and was released back to his ocean home.

Welcome home, Peri!
