Please welcome Zain Khalid to the Whitney Laboratory! Zain joins the Strother Lab to pursue a M.S. in Neuroscience working on whole-brain imaging of zebrafish.

Zain earned his B.S. in Biology from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. As an undergrad, he interned in the Crampton Electric Fish Lab where he developed an interest in sensory biology and neuroethology.

After completing his bachelor's, Zain worked as a technician at the Gaither Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab, where he worked on projects using environmental DNA and population genetics. At the Gaither Lab, he collaborated with FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to detect and quantify Karenia brevis from soil samples using qPCR and ddPCR. He also worked on eDNA detection of invasive lionfish in the Atlantic, and a population genetics project, investigating Levantine dwarfism in fishes of the Mediterranean Sea.

Zain is passionate about fish biology, ecology, and evolution. He is a dedicated multi-species angler and photographer. He also enjoys listening to music and playing drums at open jazz jams.
