Please welcome Elisabeth Carter to Whitney Laboratory!

Elisabeth Carter is a first-year PhD student at the University of Florida, and has joined Dr. Christine Schnitzler’s lab here at Whitney Laboratory. Elisabeth is originally from Georgia and received her BS from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. She is interested in studying how evolution plays a role within cell complexity. Elisabeth recently completed her Master’s degree at Mercer University where she researched the interactions and conserved structural elements between various proteins that pre-adapted unicellular eukaryotes for the “leap” to multicellularity seen at the base of the metazoan radiation. As a graduate student in the Schnitzler lab, she plans to use evolutionary and functional genomics to study stem cells in the context of development and regeneration in the colonial cnidarian Hydractinia. In her free time, she enjoys listening to podcasts, attempting to cook, and spending time with her fiancé, Ben.
