Welcome Justin Waletich to Whitney Laboratory!

Justin has recently moved to Florida from Oregon. He received his BSc in Microbiology from Oregon State University. At OSU he worked in a plant lab studying the interactions between soybean and the pathogen Phytophthora sojae.  His research focused on determining the mechanisms in which pathogens enter plant cells and microscopy for imaging this process.

Justin joins Whitney Lab as a PhD student in Dr. Christine Schnitzler’s lab.  His research will focus on stem cells and regenerative biology using Hydractinia as a model system. As members of the sister group to bilateral animals, the knowledge gained about the biological processes in Hydractinia will give us evolutionary clues about our own cellular properties and mechanisms.

In his free time, Justin enjoys science, being outdoors, tennis and basketball.
