Please welcome graduate student Dorothy Mitchell to Whitney Laboratory! She recently joined Dr. Mark Martindale's lab where she is investigating stem cell development in relation to reproduction and regeneration in Mnemiopsis leidyi.

Dorothy received her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Auburn University in Alabama. She grew up on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Fairhope, Alabama. From a young age, she has been interested in the various marine invertebrates found across the diverse coastal estuary systems surrounding her home. During college, she discovered her passion for using marine model systems to study cellular processes when she started working on tentacle formation in the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi. She was given the opportunity to complete an undergraduate research project which led her to become familiar with the innovative research going on at the Whitney Lab. She recently joined Dr. Mark Martindale’s Lab where she is investigating stem cell development in relation to reproduction and regeneration in Mnemiopsis leidyi. She hopes to apply the skills she gains in experimental embryology towards exploring broad questions in stem cell evolution. She enjoys going on runs with her dog, cooking, biological illustration, snorkeling, fishing, and camping.
