Bailey-Niblett Family Endowment Helps Fund Trip to XXI International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding

The Bailey-Niblett Family Endowment helped fund Karen Carvajal's trip to the XXI International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. At the event Karen received third place for her poster presentation on "Effects of fish meal replacement with insect meals (Hermetia illucens and Acheta domesticus) on growth performance, digestibility, digestive enzyme activity, and fatty acid profile of juvenile Totoaba macdonaldi".

Karen joins the Ibarra-Castro Lab to pursue a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. 

Sang Bobbitt Hanna - 2023 Matthaei Ecological Scholar

This summer he is working under Dr. Leonardo Ibarra-Castro with various components of aquaculture such as the breeding processes of different species under controlled conditions, the behavior, preferences, and conditional effects of juveniles, wild stock sampling, tagging, and tracking, and the release processes of different species in various locations. He is also helping with husbandry of the organisms.

Congratulations to Dr. Leonardo Ibarra-Castro and colleagues who published papers in Algal Research -"The effect of nitrogen limitation on carbohydrates and β-glucan accumulation in Nannochloropsis oculata" and in Revista de Biología Tropical - "Ontogeny of digestive enzymes in larvae of the Clown Anemonefish, Amphiprion ocellaris (Perciformes: Pomacentridae)."

On Feb. 9, after months of preparation, Whitney Laboratory, with the help of volunteers and local boat captains, released over 100,000 juvenile redfish in waters within a 15-mile radius of the facility.
