Please welcome Lucas Cathey to the Whitney Lab! Lucas joins the Strother and Loesgen labs as a Research Technician. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Florida.

As an undergraduate, Lucas studied the enzymatic activity of the oxalate decarboxylase found in Bacillus subtilis, and helped lead study into one of its isozymes and the potential relation between their activity. In his junior year, he also worked as an intern at Argonne National Laboratory, where he helped develop a comprehensive database cataloguing the properties, degradation characteristics, and environmental effects of plastics and bioplastics. This experience has given him a love for biochemistry and microbiology, and he is eager to expand his horizons at the Whitney Laboratory before he plans to obtain his Ph.D. When he isn’t researching, he enjoys reading history books, writing, and traveling.
